Come Hell or High Water
We’re Here to Stay
Since 1891, New Orleans Firefighters have protected the city of New
Orleans with unwavering courage
and loyalty. Currently there are 700 men and women who work to protect
the city.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina dealt the city a near devastating blow. The storm destroyed firehouses and equipment throughout the city. The New York City District Council of Carpenters and the Leary Foundation worked together to initiate the New Orleans Firehouse Restoration Project. Highly skilled union carpenters worked side by side with NOFD firefighters and civilians from across the country. Eleven firehouses have been fully renovated and reopened. Some said it would take ten years and millions of dollars, but with dedication and generous support of so many organizations, the work was completed in less than two years. NOFD is grateful for all the donations of materials, labor, and financial support.
Restoring the firehouses also restored a secure and normal city for the citizens as they returned home. New Orleanians and visitors appreciate the dedicated work the NOFD does every day throughout the year to protect lives and property.
A group of business leaders created The New Orleans Firefighters Foundation in August, 2006. This nonprofit 501(c)3 organization supports the men and women of the New Orleans Fire Department with fundraising efforts and partnerships with other foundations. The foundation thanks the New Orleans Rotary Club for sponsoring the firefighter calendar project and the donation of $75,000 from the sale of the 2008 calendar.
